Basic Philosophy of University Teachers
It is said that university faculty members have three main areas of work: education, research, and social contribution.
It is up to each individual to decide which of these they focus on, but I believe that the primary mission of a university is to educate. If all you want to do is research, there are various public and private research institutes, and many other places have much better research environments than universities. In addition, many people involved in society contribute to society to a greater or lesser extent. There is no reason why university faculty should contribute to the community in any particular way. However, educating students is something that only universities can do. Universities pass on “knowledge” through their students, and when they go out into the world, they are involved in the creation of new “knowledge” as they put their “knowledge” into practice.
Based on this concept, I myself work with the following broadly in mind.
Education(including intramural work)Research:Social contribution=3:1:1
Of course, what constitutes a unit of measure is ambiguous, and the numbers are probably conceptual and change from time to time. The bottom line is that education comes first and foremost.
Education Policy
It is very difficult to describe in a few words what should be educated to students in a university.
In my lectures, I try to introduce them to “systematized knowledge” in order to stimulate their interest in intellectual activities.
My primary focus in educating students assigned to my laboratory is the training of logical thinking skills. Through graduation research, I hope that students will acquire logical thinking and writing skills.
Research Policy
In the midst of the trend toward performance-oriented research and the demand for short-term results, public and private research institutions in particular seem to have lost the luxury of working on “systematization of knowledge”.
In contrast, underlying my own research attitude is a strong desire to “systematize knowledge”.
As “inverse analysis” does, I find the most exciting part of being a researcher is to create a new system by looking at related research from a bird’s eye view.
At the same time, as an engineering researcher myself, my emphasis is on empirical research using data.
Social Contribution Policy
One way in which university faculty members can contribute to society from a different standpoint from those in government or the private sector is to develop “fair arguments”. Although they may be criticized for being ignorant of reality, I believe that speaking out with fair arguments is one of the jobs expected of university faculty members, who have almost no ties to the government or the private sector.
I am currently considering the areas of surveying and real estate as subjects where I can make a contribution to society.
